Maas Vessel

Muds from the banks of the river Maas in the south of The Netherlands include naturally-occurring earthenware clays consisting of minerals that absorb, retain, and release water less predictably than commercial (engineered) clays. The drying cycle of river clay is unusually long. Consequently, avoiding uneven drying (and therefore cracking) when producing with highly degraded clay is challenging. Maas Vessel, acknowledging this limitation, was cast onto a scaffold with slurry engineered to minimize shrinkage.
